I washed the floor and bought myself flowers. I gave a box of stuff to my sister and found three more garbage bags worth of stuff to take to Value Village tomorrow.

The most challenging thing to do this week was the one thing that sounded like the simplest. Sit for ten minutes in a spot in your apartment that you never sit. This for me would be "Devin's Side" of the bedroom. For anyone reading that doesn't know: Devin (my ex) and I moved into this apartment back on September first of this year. Shortly after we moved in, our relationship started to deteriorate and one Saturday in November I came home to an empty apartment. I won't get into details, but the long and the short of it is, two months later that is still "Devin's Side."
I've never acknowledged it until today, but there's a line in my bedroom that I don't cross. As I sat there for the ten minutes the book suggests I realised that the easy thing to do would be to move to another apartment, maybe even in a different building. But running from a problem is never something I do willingly so I decided that the corner I was sitting in will be my new reading corner. I am going to find the most comfortable reading chair I can and I am going to make that corner my home.

"All forward motion counts." - Hollie Baylor, Elizabethtown

Apartment Therapy

Hello again ladies and gents,
I've taken a brief hiatus to return to you with a new(er), emptier apartment that is in desperate need of some TLC. I never realized how sore my back was until I tried to stretch it out. Ouch!
If you're wondering what Bikram yoga is, look here. This is the best two-sided description of the practise that I could find (it's really the only one that shows the benefits and the risks and controversy all in the same article). Regardless of the risks and the controversy (which I personally try to ignore), it feels good. And in the infamous words of Sloan "If it feels good, do it."
That's good enough for me!

In other news, I have purchased WhoWhatWhere the book. So far it is tremendous. Not going to lie, I'm a size ten and most days I'm pretty okay with that.
Now regardless of if a person is a runway model or not, eating disorders are a big deal, it is also a personal issue. So as much as you can be concerned (and it's probably a good thing that you are), getting angry solves nothing, neither does calling someone a "sick ****".

So I would like to make this very clear:
Does the model posted below have an eating disorder: probably.
Do I think she could use a cheeseburger: yes (and probably a good helping of self-esteem)
Am I promoting eating disorders: absolutely not.
Do I think Vera Wang makes amazing clothes: without a question.

Ignorance gets you nowhere, let's keep it to the clothes people.

The Verdict

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Are they your friend because they're nice to you? Do you go out for coffee? Or do they just know your name?
I find that as I reflect more and more, I also realize that I have more acquaintances than friends. I don't really have a large group of people that I would consider close friends. I maybe only have 3 or 4 people that would fall into my "good friend" category. They're the ones that I phone to keep in touch with (or ask them stupid or random questions, I've never been good at small talk), go on weekly dates with and the ones that actually show up when I ask them if they want to go out.
Now, I'm not the kind of person that has to go out a couple of times a week to feel like I've accomplished something. I'm a people person, but I also enjoy some time to myself. I think that it builds character. After all if you can't live with yourself, how can you live with someone else?

I've decided that I'm going to make a plan. I'm not sure what the plan is going to entail quite yet and I don't think I've even decided what the plan is going to fix. My situation in life right now is very frustrating. I don't really know what I'm going to do with my life and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to figure it out. I'm always so hesitant to make plans. What if they change? Or even worse, what if they have to change?

I think I'm going to join a class. Like a drawing class. One without any real "homework" but will still offer me a chance to interact with people without any obligation to do so. I am also going to get my tattoo. I've always wanted one and I'm just going to go out and do it. I am going to make a list of things I've always wanted to do and I'm actually going to do it. Just because I can. And it's not just going to be a list of things I would like to do. I am actually going to do whatever is on the list. For now I'm going to aim to do one every two months. So I'm going to talk about interior decorating, because I think it's fun and I've done a lot of looking online lately to find some ideas for my new apartment.
Of all the pages I've found I'm most in love with Apartment Therapy. So in love in fact that I went out and bought the book about a month ago so I have it ready to go when I move in. It is the page that convinced me that living in a bachelor suite is going to be okay because as long as it's organized correctly, you shouldn't go too crazy. I'm excited though, my apartment has good bones and I think I've come up with enough furniture as well. We'll see once we get it all in there.

'Tis the season... of change! The farther I get into it, the more I'm convinced that the path I picked isn't the right one. It's not even that when I picked it, it was the wrong path. I am just not the same person that I was when I picked that path. I'm no longer the person that sits quietly at a desk hashing out computer code. I am now the people person, the person that helps people problem-solve. I am the organized, teaching, creative, talking person in front of the crowd instead of the quiet one at the back. After it all, I have learned to achieve balance. I have learned how to teach and to be taught at the same time.
I have to find a way that I can channel this into a career. I can't bear to think that I will be stuck in an office. I need people, I need energy and computers just won't give that to me.
I've always been the kind of person that believes that doing something that you love to do is far more important than the number on your paycheque. I do whenever I have a youth retreat to go to. I don't know why it is exactly that I have a problem telling people that I coordinate youth retreats and that I enjoy it and that I've been thinking about being a minister for a long time now. It's so easy to state here, but when you're out on a date with someone why is that so hard to admit? Is it fear of rejection (After all, I'll be the first to admit that that's one thing I really have a hard time dealing with) or is it that I'm afraid of the stigma attached to the term christian? I'm not really sure... I always feel the need that the term Christian is just not descriptive enough. I am not an evangelical, homophobic, narrow-minded person. I am a love centred person, someone who believes that regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or the amount of money you make God loves you - you are a child of God, a part of creation just the same as the rest of the world.
I need to stop apologizing, this is who I am.

PS. Where does one learn this? I would assume you should just wear what you love, but how to be sure...
I don't know which rules should be followed and which should be tossed. Like wearing red and pink or navy and black. Good? Not good?
Somehow you have to find your own style without sticking out of the crow too much. Lets face it, I would look pretty goofy walking around in downtown Winnipeg in haute couture. Winnipeg is very much about jeans and t-shirts and it's a little boring. There is a whole world of denim-free, colour friendly fashion out there! Embrace it! I love sitting in a coffee shop in Osbourne Village just people watching. It is by far the most artistic community in Winnipeg and it's even more evident when you examine how the people that frequent Osbourne and River dress.

I love looking at street fashion.
This has been what I've been using for inspiration lately:
Face Hunter (London)
Hooks n' Pegs (Winnipeg) - good links here to other cities too

Now I've just got to decide what I'm going to wear tonight...

Finally.

When is enough, actually enough?
I have been through a string of interesting relationships since I was 15 and I don't think I ever admitted that getting my ass dumped was actually painful. Excruciating actually. I don't know if it's pride, or if I'm just naive but either way, it's not good for my mental state. I realized today that I am constantly living in denial. Ever since I was in high school. I'm fine. I'm always fine. If I'm not fine now I'll be fine eventually so just leave me alone to steep in my own melancholy.
I always though that being upset meant that I was weak. But as it turns out, I'm probably more weak now than I've ever been and I think it's because of the 21 years of pent-up rage and hurt that are finally working their way to the surface.
I am not okay, and every time I've said that I've been okay or have been overwhelming rational about a situation that I really should not have been rational about (Halloween anyone?) I was lying.
So to all of my ex-boyfriends (this is a very broad category, so if you think you might fit in this category, even loosely, you probably do) out there that may or may not be reading this, I have cried, screamed at and been absolutely furious with each and every one of you. Yes. All of you.
I guard my emotions thus creating my own baggage and while yes, I have been mistreated in my dating history I need to be more honest about it. I need to stop sugar-coating things because clearly I'm not even protecting myself any more.
I don't think I deserve how I've sometimes been treated and I'm tired of thinking that every time a relationship goes south, it's all my fault. Some times it is (I am human after all) but not every time. No, it was not my fault that I got dumped on a camping trip with my entire (extended) family. It was not my fault that I got neglected, emotionally abused or cheated on. It was not my fault.

I think I'm going to have to repeat that a few more times to myself before I actually believe it. But I think I'm heading in the right direction.
Finally.

Adulthood

I've been thinking a lot lately about being an adult. I'm graduating from university in the spring and I'm repetitively asked about my plans are post-grad. There's the expectation that I'll follow the example of my parents: get a job, get married, find somewhere to live and then have kids. Right now, there is really no chance that I'll be getting married or having kids in the near future. I don't even know if I want to have a real job. What do I need one for? As long as I have enough money to live does it really matter what I do? As long as I'm happy...
A couple of my friends got engaged this week. It's weird looking back and realizing that it could have easily been me engaged at this point. I don't know how I feel about it. On the one hand it's sad to see how the relationship has deteriorated, but on the other hand, would I have been ready?
There's really no way of knowing, but just to think "It could have been me..."
I told my parents this week not to expect any grandkids from me. It's not that I don't like kids, I love kids, it's just I see there being no stable family-unit in my future. I always wonder if it's me. Is it me that attracts these men or are they drawn to me? Why? Am I really that weak? It's not that I don't want to eventually get married, have kids and all that. I just can't even find anyone to date, never mind marry. I'm stuck living with me "through sickness and in health, for as long as we both shall live" is there really no one else out there that wants to stick with me too?
All that aside, I know that I need my own space. I might go back to school, maybe journalism or photography. But I'll work for a year; see how it goes. I'm just so tired. I'm tired of living in someone else's house. Both litterally and not.

The Little Black Book of Style

I just finished reading Nina Garcia's Little Black Book of Style over the weekend. His name was Ethan and he died, premature, at only two months old when I was about 13. His small life had such a profound effect on our family. I find that it's so sad that we don't talk about him. Any memories we have of him can't be brought up in the presence of family. I don't even know if my younger cousins know about him.
We never had a chance to grieve because we weren't allowed to talk about it.
That's why I've decided to get two feathers tattooed on my back, in memory of Ethan. It's my little tribute to him. As young as I was, I do think I understood what was going on.

I feel so untouched.

This is my song of the moment, and for those of you who don't know what the song mentioned in the subject line is here are the details:
The Veronicas - Untouched
Download it. It only seems that the only thing that ever comes out of Steves mouth is fiscal-this and economic-that. While I'm sure the case isn't that he doesn't care (I'm actually sure that this is far from the case), his priorities are portrayed as being only monetary and I think that is a large part of the problem. I understand that political parties are voted in for having a particular stance on something (typically anyways) but I think what we need is a more well-rounded government. Canadians are afraid that if Steve concentrates on increasing tax cuts on corporations the people behind it will be forgotten. I don't know if the answer to our current polical forray is a conservative majority OR a coalition. We need a balance and people don't see a balance, even if it is there. I agree, dependence on the system is not beneficial for anyone, taxpayers or the people using it. The problem is we need some kind of transition, it's like quitting smoking you know? Cold turkey only works for a while. The current system doesn't work for our current government and it wouldn't work for a conservative majority either (or a coalition for that matter). I think it would cause more problems than anything to be honest. What the conservatives need to come out and say is "look, we're human, we understand people are dependent on the current system and we want to fix that problem." They need to make sure that Canadians understand that they are not "cutting them off" but moulding the system from a crutch into a stepping stone to develop successful and productive citizens. I'm not really supporting anyone at this point, I think we need to hit the reset button, we need to have the parties regroup and reshape their mandates accordingly. If I had my way I would boot ALL the leaders from all four parties from Parliament. They have turned the house of commons into a schoolyard and it's embarrassing to watch from both sides. I wouldn't want any of those four representing me as my prime minister. That doesn't make me a commie or a socialist or a traitor. I am a Canadian without a political party. I am the child in a bad divorce that can't decide between mom and dad. Choose the conservatives and I'm "insensitive" or choose the coalition and be a "treasonous commie". I've stunned myself speechless.

Now how did this go about you might wonder?
I was looking around at the runway shows on New York Magazine and was inspired to actually find out what clothes I have. And I've since decided that I really don't need to purchase any more clothes for, oh, a year? And that would only happen if I decided to donate a whole bunch more Value Village.

They should have a clothing library. (I'm not sure who "they" are, but they should have one)
I mean how sweet would that be? Pay an annual fee of some kind (like $100) and have unlimited access to a bunch of clothes. Instead of buying those sweet purple suede boots, you could just rent them for a week. And then you could have an end of year sale every year where some of the things that would go out of style more quickly you could sell off. It would be a perfect way to raise money to buy more clothes for the next year or so.

I like it, this might just be my million-dollar idea.

(With my luck, this will probably have already been invented. I don't know if it's the cheezy lines or the fact that for a normal person to find such "perfect love" is next to impossible. I just don't know. Don't get me wrong the leading men in these movies are almost always delightful to look at for the two hours durration of the movie (hell-o Jude Law!) it's just I don't think the people in those movies actually exist. It's hard to divorce the actor from the part. I'm sure Nathan Fillion is just as sexy in real life but am I attracted to Nathan Fillion or Malcom Reynolds? Seeing as I don't actually know Nathan Fillion I would have to go with Mal on this one. So really, it's all a daydream. Those perfect, sexy, fun, we-never-fight-and-if-we-do-we-will-find-a-way-through-it relationships do not exist. Or at least, I'm pretty sure they don't. I've since gotten a new (and fabulous) haircut and have started to embrace my more feminine self. I have a new affinity for Forever 21 and all things tights-related. I have also discovered the wonderful world of lace lingerie. It doesn't matter how bad I feel I always feel sexy when I know I'm wearing hot undies.
I still haven't torn myself away from The Gap either.
I've bought so many things at Value Village lately that I would put most shopping diva's to shame. I bought I pair of black, patent leather, pointed-toed Steve Madden flats for $5. Yes. $5.

In the last couple weeks I've realized a few things.

I'm going to write a book.

I'm going to get my nose pierced (I've always wanted to, so I might as well just do it already!)

I have tremendous friends.

I don't want to move away from Winnipeg as badly as I thought.

I have a shoe fettish.

I can't wait until I'm out of school.

Yup.

Folk Fest, Go-Carting and Adventures at The Gap

Folk Fest ROCKED! I'm totally going next year. I might camp too, we'll see where I am. I found two bands that weekend: Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet and The Acorn. Both very cool and folky (obviously).

Yesterday I had the privilage of driving the Manitoba Science Academy kids to Go-Carting and a movie. It was a lot of fun, they're all such good kids. Batman was sold out so there were a few of us that went to Hancock instead. It was really funny and was a good take on a super hero movie I thought. While we were waiting for the movie to start, I went shopping. I FOUND PANTS THAT FIT ME. I know! Hard to believe, but the Gap has an ankle length pant that is actually a regular length on me (oh the joys of being short). But that means I don't have to hem them! Hallelujah! Cause I hate hemming pants.

Oh and now more on the hair saga:

Remember how I loved my new hair cut? Well, it's grown out for a while now and now it's hideous. It's like a giant triangle of poofyness. I'll have to get a haircut before I go back to school (and while I still have money).

Fly Me Away Mr. Seagull

When I was at Value Village yesterday I found this cute little necklace in the jewelery section for $1.99

I think it's so cute! That or work as an assistant at some magazine and run my personal life into the ground. I don't admit to having a good fashion sense, or any fashion sense for that matter, but maybe if I lived in New York I would be inspired to forgo food and buy Jimmy Choo instead.
